Before you get to see the dentist, there are a number of things you can do to contain the problem:
If you have broken a tooth or split a filling, avoid hot or cold food and drink, and avoid chewing on the damaged tooth. Try to keep the area clean by toothbrushing and flossing until you can see the dentist.
In case of severe toothache visit the dentist as quickly as possible. Until then, use analgesics to relieve the pain, but take care not to exceed the maximum dose. If you are in doubt, contact your local pharmacy. Severe toothache usually occurs because bacteria or a split have penetrated the nerve inside the tooth.
Severe tooth pain associated with an infection around a wisdom tooth can be lessened with chlorhexidine mouthrinse, which you can buy over the counter in the pharmacy. Visit the dentist as quickly as possible.
If a tooth has been knocked completely or partly out due to an accident, keep the broken teeth in clean water or in your mouth. Visit the dentist immediately – it may be possible to reinsert the tooth.
Outside our normal opening times, you can contact an Emergency Dentist. If you get severe toothache during the night, contact the on-call GP or the accident & emergency ward.
